My Top 10 Films of Summer 2014

Well, the summer is over.  Not officially, but by Hollywood's calendar it's long gone.  Just look at the box office numbers for the last few weekends and it will tell the story.  All the big blockbusters have hit theaters.  Most of them coming and going over the last few months, although some of them are still hanging out at your local multiplex.

I thought it was actually a pretty great summer for movies.  All the experts will tell you that it was one of the least profitable summer box office seasons in years.  That doesn't mean there weren't some truly great films released.

Unfortunately, some of my favorite films of the summer received limited releases or were box office bombs.  Why some of these films didn't get a wider release and why they failed to draw an audience is a discussion for another day.  In the meantime, if you haven't seen some of these films, make sure to check them out when they are available on instant streaming or DVD.

1 - Snowpiercer

Snowpiercer's journey to America is as epic and filled with drama as the actual film.  It's unfortunate that a film like this couldn't be seen on the big screen by more people, but the good news is that it found an audience On Demand. That's a good thing because Snowpiercer is one of the more original films in decades.  Director Bong Joon-ho is one of the most visionary directors in the industry and has created an instant classic Sci-fi film jam packed with atmosphere, action, fantastic cinematography and a top-notch cast.  If you like your films a little different, hunt Snowpiercer down.

2 - Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy is the most fun you'll have at the movie theater all year.  Dare I say, Guardians is the best Marvel film to date.  I'd have to work very hard just to find something I disliked about the film.  It has everything.  Comedy, action, a great soundtrack and a foul-mouthed gun-toting raccoon.  What more could you ask for?  The plot is your typical MacGuffin story, but that doesn't matter.  It's all about these great characters and watching them interact with one another.  I can't wait for the sequel and I can't wait to hang out in space with these characters again when it's released on Blu-Ray.

3 - Edge of Tomorrow

Edge of Tomorrow bombed at the box office.  The budget was about 170 million and it barely managed 100 million domestically. There are a few theories why it struggled to find an audience. Since the studio is changing the name of the film for the DVD release, it seems at though they are blaming the generic name. The original name of the book it's based on is "All You Need is Kill" a much more eye catching name.  Some blame Tom Cruise and feel that last year's disappointing Sci-Fi film Oblivion was still too clear in the mind of the audience.  The good news is that Tomorrow raked in 200 million overseas.  Whatever the reason, America missed out. Tomorrow is an action-packed film with an interesting plot.  Anybody who is a gamer can identify with the plot of Edge of Tomorrow.  It's too bad the film couldn't find its audience among the teen population.  One more reason to see Edge of Tomorrow: a sweaty Emily Blunt exercising.  Thank me later.

4 - The Raid 2

The Raid is fists down the best action franchise going today.  Yes, you read that right.  The best action franchise is an Indonesian Martial arts film directed by a 6 foot 7 Welsh dude. American action films have become riddled with cliches and have gone soft in recent years. Well, there's nothing soft about The Raid.  The Raid 2 has a much bigger story than the first.  I can honestly say it's one of the better crime films in years.  The Raid 2 is one of the more graphically violent films you will find.  It's also quite beautiful in its choreography.  Each fight is like a deadly dance.  Evans is a director to keep an eye on.  The cinematography and editing is fantastic.  Much more than you'd expect from a marital arts film.  Like the first film, the sound is also amazing.  Ever bullet and every punch can be felt.  If you like your action films extra violent, The Raid 2 might be for you.

5 - Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

The last two Planet of the Apes films should be a template Hollywood uses when creating sequels/prequels to beloved franchises.  Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes perfectly weave their way into the previous films.  In Dawn, we follow Caesar as he tries to build a society of Apes away from humanity.  Caesar steals the film.  Or should I say Andy Serkis steals the film?  Serkis has made a career out of motion capture.  He should have been nominated for an Oscar for his performance as Gollum in Lord of the Rings.  As great as Gollum was, his work here tops it.  He brings such life to Caesar.  You can see Serkis in every line of Caesar's face.  It's also in the eyes, they're so expressive that Caesar doesn't need a lot of dialogue to know how he feels or what he wants.  Even if the Apes franchise isn't your bag of bananas, check out Dawn just because it's a CGI marvel.

6 - 22 Jump Street

22 jump Street is one of the funniest comedies of the year and has turned into a legitimate action/comedy franchise. Jump Street is carried by the fantastic chemistry between Hill and Tatum. The film also mines tons of laughs by winking at the camera and poking fun at the cliches that plague most sequels. Jump Street is a formulaic buddy cop comedy that feels fresh and fun.  Give me 3 or 4 more of these and I'll be happy.  Be sure to watch the credits.  It's easily one of the best "during the credits" content I've seen in a while.

7 - X-Men: Days of Future Past

I'm not a huge fan of the X-Men franchise.  I've never read any of the comic books and I'm not even sure I've seen all of the films.  I watched X-Men: First Class a few years ago because of some of the additions to the cast, mainly Michael Fassbender (one of my favorite actors) Jennifer Lawrence and James McAvoy.  I was really impressed and began anticipating Days of Future Past.  I was not disappointed.  Days of Future Past is right in my cinematic wheel house as it is essentially a time travel film.  Days of Future Past also features my favorite scene of the year.  I won't spoil it, but it perfectly uses the song "Time In a Bottle."

8 - Lucy

Director Luc Besson (Leon: The Professional, The Fifth Element) succeeded in disguising an art house genre flick as a mainstream action film. Those expecting a typical popcorn action film might be surprised to find subliminal and metaphorical messages. Not to mention themes on evolution and humanity. Lucy's not going to reinvent the action genre, but it might convince Hollywood that women can kick ass and sell tickets too.  Lucy isn't for everybody and will probably leave many people scratching their heads while the credits roll, not sure of whether or not they liked the film or not.  Regardless, I think it's worth a watch.

9 - Neighbors

Nobody wants to get old, but becoming uncool is even less appealing to most people.  In Neighbors, we follow the Radner's played by Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne, who have settled into suburban normalcy.  They have a kid, a house and jobs.  There's no time for cool.  Their lives are mundane, but normal until a fraternity moves in next door.  They certainly aren't the "guys next door" and it's not long before they butt heads with their neighbors.  Although they are at odds with the frat house, they also represent something the Radner's used to be - young and cool.  Watching them struggle with this is where most of the laughs come from.  Not a hilarious film, but certainly worth a watch.

10 - How to Train Your Dragon 2

I didn't enjoy How to Train Your Dragon 2 as much as the first film, but the sequel is still pretty solid.  The subject matter is more serious and runs the risk of being a little too serious.  I thought the film lacked the humor of the first film.  Regardless, How to Train Your Dragon 2 features beautiful animation and some of my favorite parts were looking at all the new dragons.  How to Train Your Dragon is one of the best animated franchises going today.
