My Top 5 Worst Films of 2016

1 - Independence Day: Resurgence

I’ve tried to put how terrible Independence Day: Resurgence actually was out of my mind since seeing the film, but now I have to drudge up all these awful memories and feelings.  First, let me say that I Iove the original Independence Day. What young moviegoer wasn't drooling over Independence Day back in 1996? I’m also aware that it’s not Citizen Kane, but it’s a fun blockbuster.  Resurgence isn’t fun.  In fact, it’s barely watchable.

I was never expecting Resurgence to top the original film, especially without Will Smith, but I was at least expecting a dumb, exciting summer blockbuster, which is essentially what the original film was.  What we get is a boring mess with boring characters (some bad actors too) and a plot that is essentially the same as the first film.  Even the great Jeff Goldblum couldn’t save this one.

2 - Hail, Caesar!

Hail, Caesar! isn’t on my list because it’s a terrible film.  In fact, I enjoyed the film to a certain extent.  It makes my list because it’s a huge disappointment with a ton of wasted potential.  Just take a gander at the pedigree of actors - Clooney, Brolin, Hill, Fiennes, Swinton, Johansson, Tatum and McDormand.  Not to mention the film is directed by the Coen brothers.  It could have been great. It should have been great and it wasn’t.

I will say there are two standouts from Hail, Caesar!  First is Alden Ehrenreich, who will soon be seen as a young Han Solo.  Ehrenreich shines in every scene, but there’s one scene in particular that is easily one of the best scenes of the year.  The other is a musical number featuring Channing Tatum that skewers the goofy musical dance numbers from films in the 50’s, while paying homage to them at the same time.  Caesar is worth a watch, but you’ll marvel at the wasted opportunity.

3 - Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

I don’t hate Batman v Superman nearly as much as most people.  The film definitely has its moments.  I will say that the more time passed, the more I began to dislike the film. Dawn of Justice’s biggest problem is the fact that it’s mind numbingly slow at the start for a movie about superheroes.  It’s going to test the patience of most.

Much to the surprise and chagrin of Affleck haters, Ben was not the cause of Batman v Superman’s problems.  In fact, he was one of the bright spots. He might just be the best combination of Bruce Wayne and Batman that we’ve ever had. The other bright spot was Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman.  She has a small role, but it has me really looking forward to her standalone film in 2017.

4 - X-Men: Apocalypse

X-Men: Days of Future Past was one of my favorite films of 2014, so Apocalypse had a lot to live up to.  Unfortunately, it fell well short.  It’s not awful by any means, it’s just kind of meh.  It’s one of those films that kind of spills right out of your head as soon as you walk out of the theater.

The best and most (only) memorable part of X-Men: Apocalypse is an absolutely badass Wolverine scene.  At the very least, it has me hyped for 2017’s Logan.  I should also mention that Oscar Isaac was severely miscast as the villain here. I’ve really enjoyed Isaac in films like A Most Violent, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Ex Machina and Inside Llewyn Davis, but this role just wasn’t for him.

5 - Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates

I’m certainly no prude.  Some of my favorite comedies are raunchy, (Sausage Party is one of my favorite films of the year) but sometimes you need to have something more. Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates is a one trick pony and that one trick isn’t really that funny either.  Of course, when it is funny, it’s something we already saw in the trailer.

It’s too bad too, because the film features some really good comedic actors.  Zac Efron has surprisingly good comedic timing, Adam Devine is hilarious in everything, I love Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza was one of the best parts of Parks and Recreation.  I just wish they had more to work with here.
