The Last Ship

The Last Ship is pretty much what you'd expect from a Michael Bay produced show. It's light, it's loud and it's super cheesy. The Last Ship follows the crew of a naval destroyer as they try to find a cure for a disease that kills off most of the earth's population.

The Last Ship sometimes loses sight of the big picture and that's the fact that most of the world's population has died from the disease. It feels especially awkward when there is an overly playful scene between characters or when the whole crew is partying on a beach drinking beer as the sun sets. Maybe it's just me, but I'm not sure I would be partying if I knew that there was a high probability that my entire family and all my friends might have been wiped from existence.

My other problem with the show is that it's way too patriotic. Normally, I wouldn't have a problem with that, it's Michael Bay after all, but the world is ending and it shouldn't feel like it's USA against the world. We are all human and we should band together in a time like this. The uniform one wears shouldn't really matter.

Regardless, every episode ends with some big Braveheart-like speech as the American flag flaps in the wind and the music swells more than waves in the ocean.
